The mediaeval cathedral was built in dedication to St. Kentigern (also known as St. Mungo) in the 1100s and it has survived almost completely intact through 900 years of religious upheaval and world wars. In fact, it's one of the most complete mediaeval buildings in Scotland.

It was dedicated to St Kentigern or St Mungo, who is credited with founding Glasgow. He was its first bishop and, of course, he is Glasgow's patron saint. The Cathedral is reputedly built on the site of St Mungo's original church, founded in the 6th century on the banks of the Molendinar Burn, and was constructed over the spot where he was.

John Hardying, the chronicler, who visited Scotland in 1413, states that St. Mungo's shrine was then the centre of the life of Glasgow. In 1475 James III, on account of his great devotion to St. Kentigern, granted three stones of wax yearly for the lights at the tomb of the saint in the cathedral, near his holy well.

The St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art is a museum of religion in Glasgow, Scotland. It has been described as the only public museum in the world devoted solely to this subject, [2] [3] although other notable museums of this kind are the State Museum of the History of Religion in St. Petersburg [4] and the Catharijneconvent in Utrecht. [5]
